Vivir El Mundial (Living the World Cup)

He traducido esta entrada a español. La traducción sigue.

I have translated this post into Spanish. The translation follows.

I don’t even know how many soccer games I’ve watched here in Argentina. The day I arrived was USA v Ghana, and it continued until the final on Sunday. Almost every memory here can be associated with a game. “I went there the day of Brazil v Colombia!” “After the 2nd Argentina game…” “The 110 bus stop is the one with the Messi advertisement…” “Met her watching the semifinals…”

But I do know how many soccer games I watched before Argentina. Zero.

I guess you could say I’m not the sports-watching type. Or really the watching anything type. But the World Cup here is somehow different. It has the power to stop an entire country in its tracks, to affect the emotions of millions, simultaneously.

I haven’t seen every goal, but I’ve heard each one. It’s unmistakable. For the first half of the Belgium game, I was in my room, door shut, reading a book, but Argentina didn’t let me escape. I was told when that goal was scored.

La Gran Final. If I hadn’t seen it myself. The one goal that spread silence and disbelief over the noisiest bar I have ever been in (complete with drums and symbols). ALEMANIA CAMPEÓN DEL MUNDO burned into the bottom of the screen and into everyone’s minds. If I had only seen the singing, screaming hordes making their way toward the Obelisco, I would have thought we had won.

But we didn’t.

Yet we still sing. Proud to be Argentina.
